Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan's most famous and historic hot spring resorts, located in the mountainous region of Gunma Prefecture. Known for its high-quality sulfuric waters, Kusatsu has been a popular destination for centuries, attracting visitors seeking relaxation and therapeutic benefits from its natural hot springs.
The town's signature feature is the Yubatake (湯畑), or "Hot Water Field," a large wooden structure where the hot spring water is channeled into a series of pools and channels. The mineral-rich waters of Kusatsu are said to have healing properties, known to soothe skin conditions and relieve muscle pain.
In addition to the Yubatake, visitors can enjoy a variety of public baths (sento) and private ryokan (traditional inns), where they can bathe in the hot spring water and experience traditional Japanese hospitality. Many of the ryokan offer outdoor baths, called rotenburo, allowing guests to enjoy the stunning natural surroundings while soaking in the rejuvenating water.
Kusatsu Onsen is also known for its beautiful scenery, with nearby mountains, forests, and hiking trails providing a picturesque backdrop for visitors. The area becomes especially scenic during the winter, when the hot springs steam against the snow-covered landscape, creating a magical atmosphere.
Whether you’re visiting for relaxation, health benefits, or the beauty of the surrounding nature, Kusatsu Onsen offers a quintessential Japanese hot spring experience that has captivated travelers for generations.
